The Use of Brass Metal for Artworks

Brass is one of the coolest metals to work with. Brass has a golden colour and many people can mistake it for true gold. However, the colour darkens after a certain period without proper maintenance and necessary refinishing. Brass is also stronger than copper. However, it softens and melts much more quickly than copper.

Brass is an alloy made mainly of zinc and copper. Some other metals can also be used to get other properties that the two metals cannot provide. At present, there are more than 400 types of brass. The 260 cartridge brass is the most common. It is often used for casings of bullets and other ammunitions. It is also the cheapest. It is bright yellow in colour especially when polished.

When working on metals for the sake of art, you might be tempted to use brass and Steel beam. However, most people encounter problems when brazing the two using an ordinary brazing rod. The common brass has a melting point of 1700 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit and the brazing rod has the same melting point. Another problem when melting brass is that it does not liquefy like other metals such as silver, iron or bronze. One must also be meticulous when heating brass. It will oxidize at bright red heat and will produce a coating of green, black or brown. It will then collapse or shrivel just like when melting aluminium after the oxidation. There is also the risk of making a hole in the brass especially if it quite thin (that is if you are working with a sheet brass). This should not be a problem if you are using Brass Hexagon tubes.

You can use flux if you want to get rid of the oxides that will form. However, you can also use a brazing or soldering alloy and try to keep the temperature low. A good choice is a sliver bearing brazing rod but they are expensive. If you are on a tight budget then you can use copper or phosphorus brazing alloys. They melt at 1300 degrees Fahrenheit. However, never use them with ferrous alloys because it will produce phosphides that will prevent smooth joining. You can try to use copper to steel and use the cheap copper-phosphorus brazing rod to braze copper and brass then the result to the steel. This works best with steel and brass sheets because the copper can be easily concealed. The joint may be visible if you will do this in brass and steel rods. If you are working with rods and beams then you can opt to use lead or tin soldering.

Brass is definitely a good option for metal artists. The brass prices are relatively affordable and they offer great looks. It is definitely a cheap substitute to gold if you are trying to make a golden metal artwork. When old, brass metal artworks also have the unique antique look because they darken. With techniques in combining brass and steel above, you should be able to complete a metal art project with ease.
